The Encounter of the People of Austria with US Soldiers after
World War II
An Austrian-American Dialogue
"It's great to be an American soldier!"
"The American army garrison in our community of St. Johann is a city unto itself. All those who doubt that should undertake an inspection tour of this entirely well equipped and comfortable installation and they will come to the same conclusion. The Yankees lack virtually nothing to which they were accustomed in a small American city; perhaps their family life, and even that's not entirely true.American families are housed in a fabulous complex that lives up to its name of `Little New York', complete with central heating, electric refrigerators and a parking lot. They have even set up their own radio station with programming custom tailored to the tastes of the St. Johann Americans. A fabulous ice skating rink will provide as much enjoyment to the winter sportsmen as the magnificent grass sports fields and cinder track will provide to the summer athlete. Along side the bowling alley they have, of course, built their own cinema because, as everyone knows, the Americans are crazy about the movies. A church has also been erected in the middle of the camp, though, in typical American style, it has an adjoining smoking salon and billiard parlor. For the children of the household, a cute little school has been opened. The spacious dormitory for officers and bachelors is located along the path leading from the housing complex to the Salzach river."
