bridge The Encounter of the People of Austria with US Soldiers after World War II
An Austrian-American Dialogue

"Yankee go home"

"Austria had only gained by the presence of the Americans. Everything that they brought here, the development aid, tons of biscuits for the school kids. But then once the Austrians started to get back on their feet again, a lot of them started with the "Yankee go home" and they threw the cookies back at them."

Marianne E., born in 1932, was then a beautician in St. Johann/Salzburg. She married an American soldier. (Boltzmann-Institut/Steinocher-Fonds Interview Archive, Salzburg)
