The Encounter of the People of Austria with US Soldiers after
World War II
An Austrian-American Dialogue
"Good income from the Americans..."
"In those days, the Americans in Austria also offered a lot of chances to work. We were still in the midst of reconstruction and salaries were very low. But, as a young girl, you want to have some money to throw around. Along with my regular job in a beauty salon, I worked at night and on weekends in a canteen for GIs, making sandwiches and serving drinks. I earned more money there than my brother-in-law was making as a construction engineer."
Marianne E., born in 1932 in St. Johann/Salzburg, worked in a US canteen for GIs (Boltzmann-Institut/Steinocher-Fonds Interview Archive, Salzburg)
