The Encounter of the People of Austria with US Soldiers after
World War II
An Austrian-American Dialogue
"Uncle Sam is beloved all over the world..."
"Every day I have to walk an hour to get to the train. After a long, cold train ride, I arrive in Linz. Then I walk to school, but my first stop is at the American soup kitchen. The Americans enjoy making children in liberated countries happy with the food that they give us. They like it when Uncle Sam is beloved all over the world."
Fritz M.-O., in 1947 a schoolboy in Linz, Upper Austria (Estate of Major General Harry J. Collins, Boltzmann-Institut/Steinocher-Fonds Archive, Salzburg)
